What we collect
- Your Google account details: name, email address and profile picture, from the sign-in you approve. Nothing else from your Google account, and no ongoing access to it.
- What your school records about you: your class, section and roll number, entered by the school or imported from its own spreadsheet.
- Your exam work: the answers you give, when you gave them, how long you spent, and the resulting marks.
- Exam window events: when the exam window lost focus, was hidden, left fullscreen, or a copy or print was attempted. See exam integrity for exactly what this does and does not mean.
What we never collect
No proctoring. No microphone. No screen recording. No image, audio or video of a student is created, transmitted or stored at any point during an exam. Nothing watches or listens to anyone sitting a paper. We do not track you across other websites, and we do not sell or share anything with advertisers.
About the camera. The Android and iOS apps ask for camera permission in one place only: when a teacher taps “Take photo” to attach a picture to a question they are writing. It is requested at that tap, never at startup, and declining it leaves the photo library and the file picker working. Students never meet it: there is no camera, no file picker and no upload anywhere in the exam runner.
Children and families
Examline is used in schools, so many of the people using it are children. The whole app is built to be appropriate for them, and there is deliberately no age screen in front of it: there is no separate “adult” mode to gate, because every screen a student can reach is a school screen.
- No advertising of any kind. Examline contains no ad network, no ad SDK and no sponsored content: no AdMob, and nothing else. Nothing in the app is paid for by showing anything to a student.
- No third-party analytics or tracking SDKs. The app ships with Capacitor and AndroidX only. There is no analytics SDK, no advertising identifier is read, and no cross-app or cross-site profile of any student is built.
- No selling or sharing. Student data is never sold, rented or shared for advertising, and never used to build a profile for any purpose other than the school's own teaching.
COPPA. Accounts are created by the school, for its own pupils, as part of its normal teaching. The school directs what is recorded and authorises it on behalf of parents, which is the route the US Children's Online Privacy Protection Act provides for schools. We collect nothing from a child beyond what this page lists, and we ask a child for nothing directly.
GDPR and UK GDPR. The school is the data controller and decides what is recorded about its students; Crawlink is the processor and acts on the school's instructions. A parent or student exercising a right (access, correction, erasure, objection) should go to their school first, and we support the school in answering it.
This standard covers everything we ship, not just our own code: the APIs, SDKs and libraries inside the app are held to it too, which is much of the reason there are so few of them.
Where AI is used
Some screens can draft questions, or write an explanation to go with a report card. These run on Cloudflare Workers AI, inside the same infrastructure that serves Examline; your school's data is not handed to a third-party AI company. Marks are never produced by a model: every figure on a report card is arithmetic over the marked paper, and the model is only ever asked to interpret figures it has been given.
Who can see it
Your data belongs to your school's organisation and is stored in that organisation's own database, separate from every other school's. Teachers see the students in the classes they are assigned to. Administrators see their organisation. Nobody at one school can see another school's students, questions or results.
How long we keep it
Exam results are protected for three years after the exam ends and cannot be deleted before then, even by an administrator, and even if you delete your account. Schools need their historical records to stay intact and to add up. After three years they can be deleted.
Deleting your account clears your name, email address and picture, and replaces your name in each school's records with a reference such as “Student ANON-7K3QP2”. Results inside the three-year window survive in that anonymised form, so a class average from last term does not silently change. You cannot sign back in to those records afterwards.
Getting your data out
Questions, students and results export as CSV at any time. There is no export fee and no waiting period.
