Exam integrity & surveillance

What the exam records, how papers are flagged, what a teacher sees, and the opt-in camera and microphone evidence.

For TeachersAdministratorsStudents

Examline records what the browser tells it about the exam window and shows a teacher what happened. A flag means a person should look; nothing fails a student automatically. For what it cannot see, read Exam integrity.

What is recorded

  • Leaving the exam window, switching tabs, and leaving or entering fullscreen.
  • Attempts to copy, cut, paste, right-click or print, all of which are blocked inside the exam.
  • Losing and regaining the connection.
  • Opening the exam in a second tab.
  • With Keep a full activity log on: every question opened and every answer changed, with the time.

Times come from the server, not the student’s device. While the exam window is not in focus, the questions blur.

Flags and automatic submission

Under Settings → Keeping it fair on each exam:

Flag the paper after (times away)
After this many times away, the attempt is flagged for review. Very short moments away are not counted.
Submit for them after (times away)
Leave it on Never, or choose a number after which the paper is handed in automatically.
Count leaving fullscreen against them
Whether leaving fullscreen counts as one of those times. It is always recorded either way.
Submit button opens when this much time is left
Keeps students from handing in at the first minute: as a percentage of the time allowed, or minutes before the end.

When a student comes back after leaving, they may see a warning saying how many times they have left the exam, and how many more it takes to hand it in automatically when that is switched on.

Reviewing an attempt

The result list’s Flagged column and the live room’s Observed column show which attempts to look at: Worth a look or Needs review. Open an attempt to read its Exam log: a timeline in plain words, such as Left the exam window or Tried to copy, with a summary of how long the student was away. Show everything adds the routine events, and Export CSV downloads the log.

Opt-in surveillance

By default nothing uses a camera or a microphone and nothing is recorded. Camera, microphone, location and device evidence is a premium feature, and it runs only when three people have said yes:

  1. Your partner (or Examline) enables it for your organisation. Until then the exam settings show Surveillance — not enabled for your organisation.
  2. The exam switches on Use surveillance on this exam and chooses Front camera, Microphone, Location and Device details, and whether it is Required to start.
  3. The student reads exactly what is used on the start page and ticks I understand and agree. Their browser then asks for the camera and microphone.

Nothing is streamed or watched live. The camera and microphone are read on the student’s device, and only when a rule fires (nobody in front of the camera, more than one person, looking away, a loud sound) are a few small pictures or a few seconds of sound kept. Ten moments at most. The student sees a small tile saying the camera is on.

The exam’s staff see the evidence in the attempt’s Evidence section. It never changes a mark or a flag. Everything is deleted when results are published, or after three months.
