Candidates, seating and the roll

The Candidates tab is the list of people who may sit the exam. Only they can start it.

  • Add from the roster, Add a whole class, New student and Add a walk-in add people.
  • Give one candidate their own time (Time for this candidate, from 1 to 600 minutes) or a seat (Where they sit).
  • Seat everyone fills the rooms in roll-number order, each room’s machines first, then numbered seats. Clear seats undoes it.
  • Print the roll makes a PDF with one sheet per room, with Present and Signature columns.
  • Email everyone sends each candidate the exam’s times and a link to the instructions. The Told count shows who has heard from you and how often.

The live room

Open the exam’s Live tab. It refreshes itself every few seconds from the server’s clock and shows how many are Sitting, Submitted, Not started, Quiet a while, Worth a look and Needs review.

Each row shows the student, how many questions they have Answered, their Time left, when they Last saved, and what was Observed (for example Nothing noted, or how many times they left the exam). Filter to Sitting, Flagged or Quiet.

Message
Write to one student. They see it the next time their answers save, usually within a few seconds, and press Got it.
Add time
Give one student Extra minutes (1 to 180), added to their deadline only.
End
End one student’s exam. Their answers so far are kept and marked; they cannot go back in. This is recorded against the attempt.

Taking the register

Below the table, The register lists every candidate. Press Mark present as they arrive. Only an invigilator assigned to the exam on its Settings tab can mark attendance.

Exam rooms and the desktop app

For a hall or lab exam on the school’s own computers, students sit the paper in the Examline desktop app. During a paper it fills the screen, stays on top and cannot be closed. A second screen being plugged in is recorded. Get it from Apps for Windows, macOS or Linux.

  1. Under Settings → Exam rooms, press Add room and give it a Number on the door and a Name.
  2. Install the desktop app on each machine.
  3. On each machine, sign in as an administrator or a technician. On This machine, fill in Machine name, Machine number and Room, and press Register this machine. A web browser cannot register a machine.
  4. In the exam’s settings, under Where it is sat, choose The desktop app on registered machines in chosen rooms and pick the Rooms.
  5. Students sign in to the app, open Your exams and press Start. When they submit, the app signs them out after 30 seconds, ready for the next student.

Registered machines are listed under Settings → Exam rooms with their room, platform and when they were last seen. Take out of service stops one being used.

Rooms with no internet

An administrator can run a published exam on a machine with no connection at all:

  1. On the exam’s Settings tab, under Offline sitting, download an offline pack with a Label and a PIN. The pack holds the paper and the candidates’ entry codes, sealed under the PIN, and never the answer keys.
  2. Carry it to the exam machine, for example on a USB stick. In the desktop app choose Open an offline exam and type the Pack PIN.
  3. Each candidate signs in with their Email or roll number and Entry code and sits the paper.
  4. Afterwards, Export the results under a Results PIN and upload the file with Import a results file. A machine that comes back online can send the results itself. Marking happens on import.
