Getting started

Signing in, registering your organisation, the roles people hold, and finding your way around the app.

For AdministratorsTeachersStudents

Everything in Examline belongs to an organisation: a school, a college or a coaching centre. Its classes, students, questions, exams and results live in that organisation and nobody outside it can see them.

Signing in

Open Sign in. Type your Email address and Password and press Sign in, or press Continue with Google to use a Google account with the same email address. Examline always asks which Google account to use, because school devices are shared.

Forgotten your password? Press Forgotten your password? on the sign-in page and we email you a link to set a new one. The link works once and expires in an hour. Setting a new password signs you out everywhere else.

Creating an account

  1. Open Create your account and fill in Your name, Email address and Password. A password needs at least 10 characters; a short phrase you will remember works well. You can press Sign up with Google instead.
  2. Check your inbox. We send a six-digit code, valid for 15 minutes. Type it into Six-digit code and press Confirm my email, or press the link in the email. Send me another code sends a fresh one.
  3. You are signed in. If your school has already added your email address, its organisation opens straight away.

Registering your organisation

The owner, an administrator or the principal can register an organisation. Signed in with no organisation, press Register your organisation. Already in one, open your profile and press Register organisation.

  1. Fill in the Organisation name, its address, Your name, Your role in the organisation, Phone and Email.
  2. Press Register. The organisation is created straight away and you are its first administrator.
  3. We may call you to review the registration. Until then the dashboard says Your organisation is under review; you can still set everything up meanwhile.

Roles: who can do what

Administrator
Runs the organisation: users, classes, students, questions, exams, results and billing. An organisation always keeps at least one.
Teacher
Writes questions, builds exams and reads results for the classes and subjects an administrator assigns to them.
Technician
Installs the desktop app and registers exam-room machines. No access to exams.
Student
Sits the exams they are given and sees their own results.

A teacher can be given Extra permissions on top of their role, such as Invigilate exams (watch a live exam, message students, grant extra time, end an attempt), Approve questions and Publish results. An administrator grants them under Settings → Users. Teachers can see theirs on their profile, under Your permissions.

Finding your way around

On a computer, the narrow bar down the left holds the sections: Dashboard, Exams, Students and Questions (and Partner for a partner organisation). Hover an icon to see its name. Your picture at the foot of the bar opens your profile and, for administrators, the organisation’s Settings.

On a phone, the sections sit in a bar along the bottom with a Menu button that opens everything else, including your profile and settings.

  • Switch organisation: if you belong to more than one, use the organisation name at the top of the dashboard, or Switch on your profile.
  • Theme: on your profile choose System, Light or Dark. It is remembered on that device.
  • Leave an organisation: at the foot of your profile, under Danger zone. Your results and anything you wrote stay with the organisation.
  • Sign out: on your profile, beside your name.

First steps for a new organisation

An administrator’s dashboard shows a checklist, Get this organisation running. Work through it in this order:

  1. Add your classes and subjects: see Students & classes.
  2. Import your students: see Adding students.
  3. Write your first questions: see Question bank.
  4. Build an exam: see Creating an exam.

Also worth a minute under Settings → Organisation: the school’s details (press Edit under The school) and the Academic year. Every class, enrolment and exam you create is filed under the current year; Add a year and Make current move you on.
